Regular gym visits paying off for Victoria

One of the many activities that go on in the gym at the Life Skills Centre are exercises with clients wearing a sling attached to a hoist. This enables many of our users to participate in a variety of different activities and exercises that they would not be able to do in their everyday life or anywhere else, such as

  • Walking forwards, backwards and side to side,
  • Balancing by sitting down on stability balls,
  • Walking over step blocks and kicking footballs.

This can help strengthen many of the lower body muscles, improve balance, increase range of movement and give the user a sense of freedom and independence moving around that they may not have felt before.

Victoria is one of our regular users who can be seen in the video, regularly takes part in these activities as well as a number of other exercises in the gym. Since Victoria has been using the gym she has made an incredible increase in the range of movement and ability to move her right leg that she previously did not have. Victoria’s support workers have also commented that Victoria is now a lot more happier, has more focus and concentration and that her energy levels have increased.
