Why the hydrotherapy pool is important

The hydrotherapy pool is an essential part of the curriculum at Chailey Heritage School and a vital resource for improving young people’s core stability, coordination and range of movement.

£35 will fund a hydrotherapy session led by specialist physiotherapists and designed to meet the young people’s therapeutic, educational, behavioural and communication-related targets.

Achieving the positive physical, educational and wellbeing outcomes identified as the “next steps” in the young people’s personalised curriculum can be difficult within a traditional classroom environment and alternative environments, such as the hydrotherapy pool, are often needed.

The hydrotherapy team works hard to ensure that the service is available to all pupils, even those with tracheotomy tubes like Seth.

Seth’s story

Seth is 6 years old and has a variety of complex needs including Congenital Myopathy (a muscle disorder), and significant hypotonia (low muscle tone). Seth also has a permanent tracheostomy for ventilation and all respiratory management as he is unable to breathe independently.

One of Seth’s favourite activities is hydrotherapy. The warm, weightless pool environment is perfect for him to explore movement and use his body in ways that are tricky for him out of the water.

It is a true team effort as being fully ventilated, Seth needs both physiotherapists and nurses present in the pool. Together, the team coordinates sessions safely keeping his ventilator dry on a trolley by the poolside and moving it alongside Seth on wheels while he exercises.
