Support our specialist services

Every bid will support our specialist services so young people like Ellie can benefit from activities such as Hippotherapy.

One of Ellie’s targets at school was to follow a sequence of instructions, so in order to align her physical therapy with her educational goals, the hippotherapy team set Ellie the challenge to follow a sequence of six instructions during her riding lessons.

Over the period of a school term, Ellie learned how to perform a 20-metre circle, a change of rein (where the horse changes direction across the long diagonal of the arena) as well as four-loop serpentines and weaving around cones.

To perform these movements, Ellie needed to learn how to manoeuvre the horse using the reins and to be aware of her left and rights. These are complex skills requiring her to think ahead of where she wanted the horse to go as well as what the movements were whilst maintaining her balance on the horse at the same time.

Attending Hippotherapy sessions has allowed Ellie to grow in confidence and develop her core strength – two skills she can now take back to the classroom!
