Meet Emily, Lunchtime Assistant

At Chailey Heritage the lunchtime assistant role is very different to that in a mainstream school.  Many of the young people attending our school setting require individualised diets and very often need to be fed via gastrostomies. Due to the complexity of their feeding regime, every new recruit will receive first-class induction and ongoing training from qualified professionals.

The Lunchtime Assistant role is vital in helping make a positive difference to children with complex physical disabilities and health needs by assisting with their lunch, personal care and providing stimulating opportunities through a variety of activities. It is hard work, and requires commitment, but it is a hugely fulfilling job and can bring real joy.

Q&A with Emily, Lunchtime Assistant (LA)

Q. How did you feel when you first started as a LA?

A. I didn't realise how complex it was going to be and how many of the young people here are fed through gastrostomies. But we receive very in-depth training and you are never on your own, everyone is here to help you.

Q. Do you enjoy your role?

A. Absolutley! It is a very varied role and I get to do so many activities with the children. Besides ensuring their feeding regime is followed to the letter, I also get to read them stories, do arts and crafts and sometimes even give them a little massage to make them feel more comfortable and relaxed.

Q. What does it feel like to work at Chailey?

A. Everyone is so helpful and it really feels like being part of a team. All the Teacher's Assistants are amazing and I love working with the children here. It's a really fulfilling job and I want to learn more and do more!

Q. What would you say to someone thinking about applying for this role?

A. Go for it! If you love working with children and want to make a positive difference to their lives that's all you need. The rest you can learn with the experts who are here to support you the whole way through.
