Helen Dunman teaches the older school pupils in the Hanbury department here at Chailey Heritage Foundation. With a focus on PSHE and Drama, Helen has inspired countless staff and students for a number of years.
Recently Helen has been developing a Relationship and Sex Eduction (RSE) resource pack - which she has called The Sex Factor - with an aim for supporting individuals with more complex disabilities. Here, she tells us of her virtual experience:
"Today I attended and presented at the virtual Supported Loving Network Conference. There were about 80 attendees from all around the UK and it was chaired by Dr Claire Bates, from her home on a house boat on a river in Essex! There were presentations about Relationship and Sex Education from a Makaton Trainer and a Talking Mats facilitator. I gave my presentation at the end about the RSE work I have been doing and primarily spreading the word about The Sex Factor RSE pack.
Delegates ranged from teachers, social workers, case workers and carers. I was very encouraged to have lots of interest from delegates and requests to be put on our training list. There seemed to be a consensus among delegates that there is a huge need for quality materials for RSE to be written for people with more complex and severe learning needs. Once I got over the strangeness of presenting from my bedroom, it was a very worthwhile morning's work!"
