Ashley’s Marathon Challenge
Ashley has been regularly using the gym at the Life Skills Centre now for 8 months. Ashley has Autism and one of his goals was to improve his walking ability to enable him to carry out his day to day tasks a lot easier.
Ashley initially struggled with walking and could only walk up to 200metres. He can now walk up to 2km a session. Ashley’s speed has also increased from struggling to walk at a speed of 2.5km per hour, he can now walk on the treadmill up to 4km per hour on a hill gradient of level 5.
Towards the end of last summer we set Ashley a goal of trying to walk a marathon distance of 26.2miles. This week, Ashely managed to complete his marathon target and he was delighted. We presented Ashley with his certificate and he was over the moon. On the back of Ashley’s fitness levels improving he now has a new sense of confidence and enjoys socialising with other gym users as he plays games of skittles with them during sessions which is great to see. Ashley’s walking ability, leg strength and balance has also dramatically increased during this time.
Ashley also takes part in weekly rebound therapy sessions in the Dream Centre to give his physical fitness some variety which he really enjoys.
Well done Ashely from Dan, Charles and everyone at the Life Skills Centre.
