Usually a pupil at Chailey Heritage school, Joe has been attending art sessions at the Life Skills Centre since lockdown. Here, Laura, our Creative Arts Co-ordinator, tells us of Joe's achievements.
I have only just recently met Joe so I have worked closely with Joe’s support workers to discover his interests, likes and dislikes. Joe seems to really enjoy the sensory activities linked to noise and textures. The session is led very much by Joe, when he is alert and happy Joe likes to reach out, shake and move the items he holds. With every return visit Joe explores something new, he is also working on developing one of his key ‘next steps’ of choosing. During every session Joe is offered a selection of sensory items. Throughout the sessions he chooses which items he wishes to engage with. Joe will show us if he likes something by using his voice to communicate to us.
Joe is slowly increasing his confidence, today I saw Joe really smile and laugh when he was shaking the bucket with items inside it as well as the ribbons and bells hung on a hoop beside him.
Joe is working towards making his own noisy and textured instruments that he can then use on the bungalow.
