Celebration Day is one of the highlights of the Chailey Heritage Foundation calendar. It is usually a tremendous social gathering involving the children and young people who live with us, go to school here or use any of our services, their families, their carers, and the wonderful Chailey Heritage Foundation staff. There are numerous activities including live music, balloon artists, bubble machines, and marvellous specially designed contraptions developed by our on site engineers. It also provides an opportunity for the wonderful achievements of our children and young people to be recognised and celebrated with the presentation of awards.
This year, however, like so many other events, things look a little different. Though we were unable to invite families, friends, and other guests on site our dedicated staff still wanted to produce something memorable for the children and young people in our care.
It was decided that this year’s theme would be Hawaii. It was also agreed that instead of focusing on one day, proceedings would last a whole week.
Bespoke activity packs were sent home to those children and young people who would not be on site so they could participate in the same activities as their peers. Flowery photo frames, sensory (non-alcoholic!) cocktails and a creative arts exhibition were among the highlights.
On Thursday, we held a parade in which all the children and young people on site participated. They looked amazing in their colourful Hawaiian themed outfits, and inflatable palm trees and a beautiful rainbow balloon arch set the scene for a memorable day. The parade was also live-streamed so the children and young people at home could watch live with their families and carers.
The following day, certificates and awards were distributed. Those on site were able to interact with their teachers, peers and families by using the Microsoft Teams streaming function.
A huge thank you must go to the children, young people, and all the staff for making Celebration Day such a great success.
